Frequently Asked Questions
- A selections of pieces from Handel’s Messiah will be played by members of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra.
- Professional vocalists will perform the solo parts of the performance for your enjoyment.
- The audience will be invited to join the chorus portions of the Messiah. All experience levels are welcome to participate. For those who are too shy to sing, the performance is an exciting experience in and of itself.
Children accompanied by an adult are welcome. The event will be 1.5 hours long with no intermissions.
A sing-along Messiah (sometimes known as a DIY Messiah) is an interactive performance of popular pieces of Handel’s famed Messiah by musicians, choirs, soloists, and the audience!
Noteworthy Greater Elgin-area musicians, including the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform the music. Regionally-recognized soloists and local choirs will perform the vocal pieces. The audience will be asked to sing the choruses.
No, you don't need to know how to read music. There will be scores available at the door. The audience will be invited to sing the choral portions.

Written in 1741, Messiah is George Frideric Handel’s best-known oratorio. Though written by Handel for the Easter season, Messiah has become more commonly performed as a Christmas-time event. Typically, Messiah is performed in a concert venue by professional musicians, soloists, and a chorus.
This year, seating will be offered by vocal section – baritone, tenor, alto, and soprano – on the main floor. Family members may sit with you if you choose this seating option.
There will also be seating options for those who may not want to sing.
No. The Sing-Along Messiah is open to the general public. No auditions or other requirements need to be met in order to come and sing!
